OLD CHURCH TURNS MOD­ERN HOME

The dis­carded church at the Hooft­straat in Alphen aan den Rijn had not been in use as a church for almost 40 years. By trans­form­ing the church into an extra­or­di­nary extended-​family home the build­ing has been restored in order to remain a tac­tile mem­ory of the past.

SUS­TAIN­ABLE FOR­EST RESIDENTS

In Ede on the edge of Sys­selt for­est FARO is design­ing a super sus­tain­able dis­trict for Het Bod­de­gat with around 30 homes. The dis­trict is being devel­oped by the future own­ers them­selves in the form of a CPC (Col­lec­tive Pri­vate Commissioning).

STEIGEREI­LAND 2.0SUS­TAIN­ABLE IN WOOD

In Amsterdam’s IJburg steigerei­land, FARO has built an energy-​neutral dwelling accord­ing to the stan­dards of Cra­dle to Cra­dle. All mate­ri­als are or com­postable or recy­clable. The House is also the first build­ing in Nether­lands with two passive-​Build-​quality marks, granted for both the design and the built result.

BLACK AND WHITE MAKE THE ZEBRA, LEIDEN

New Ley­den is a neigh­bor­hood built on an old slaugh­ter­house ter­rain in Lei­den North. To revi­tal­ize the neigh­bor­hood peo­ple with higher incomes were attracted by issu­ing free build­ing plots. In the urban plan, made by MVRDV, rows of nine houses are repeated on top of the park­ing garages. The Zebra home is in the mid­dle of such a row on an exist­ing street along the out­skirts of the plan.

PEO­PLE BUILD THEIR OWN HOUSE, LEIDEN

New Ley­den is an unusual CPO project; the 18 own­ers had to develop a com­mu­nal park­ing garage with 18 indi­vid­ual town­houses on top and that in a very tight urban grid.
FARO designed a town­house in field 35. But more impor­tant was our con­tri­bu­tion as co-​organizer of the CPO-​Association. Coen Kamp­stra of FARO took up a large part of the line work as chair­man of the association.

SENIOR CIT­I­ZENS TOGETHER IN THE CITY, ZUTPHEN

For blocks 9, 11 and 12 of the Noorder­haven plan in Zut­phen, FARO is pro­duc­ing a design together with those par­ties to reflect the wishes of future res­i­dents. Key words are: urban in the city, a beau­ti­ful court­yard, unity in dis­tinct­ness, future-​focused with the past in your ruck­sack, space for your­self and for each other, and super sustainable.

ENCLOSED PAR­ADISE, MAARSSEN

FARO were asked to pro­vide an image make-​over for a char­ac­ter­less bun­ga­low, by adding extra rooms and a cov­ered swim­ming pool. The site itself pro­vided the struc­ture for the new plan. The project was struc­tured around the site con­tours and the ori­en­ta­tion of the build­ings and the plan com­bines the use of ‘hum­ble’ mate­ri­als and strong archi­tec­tural ele­ments. Sub­tle con­trasts in mate­r­ial give the design coherence.

HOUSE IN A HOUSE, AMSTERDAM

The city plan­ners of ‘West 8’, located on the Bor­neo penin­sula in the erst­while east har­bor of Ams­ter­dam, set aside an area for the devel­op­ment of 60 cus­tom homes. All houses are 9.5 meters high on the street side, 16 meters deep, and rise from the back (south) straight out of the water of an inlet. All cars are garaged in the build­ings and the ground floor is 3.5 meters high. Out­door spaces are pro­vided by decks and roof-​top terraces.

On Steigerei­land, in Ams­ter­dam, Pieter Wei­j­nen built his own exper­i­men­tal energy effi­cient wooden home. The house is painted a vibrant blue, refer­ring to the tra­di­tional dike houses of nearby Durg­er­dam. Spa­cious­ness is the key­word in this design.
