SANDSTONE FOR ‘T ZAND, UTRECHT
Leidsche Rijn is a large VINEX development at the west side of Utrecht. In this new part of town FARO has designed a large housing block that varies in height from 3 to 7 stories. The highest part is at the side of the railroad that has more urban character. The client, housing corporation Mitros, wanted a building with ‘‘real balconies’’. How can you build a housing block with urban looks and sticking out balconies? The balconies are made of brick and the light yellow color relativises this at the same time.
A lively ground floor and a large variety of floor plans was another important issue. This is done by designing apartments with their own front door on street level, interesting appartments on the corners and several variations of see through appartments.
