A SUPER URBAN BLOCK, HAARLEM
Slachthuisbuurt-Zuid in Haarlem is being restructured. The area is located on an important access road for Haarlem, which is why the Zoning Plan requires the style to be recognizable. In a so-called RGBO process, FARO together with Trebbe, Rutges Vernieuwt, Tentij, Vibes and Schouten are working in a consortium on a sustainable design for Elan Wonen. The consortium is designing, applying BIM, building and maintaining a block of 85 apartments, parking and commercial services and a block of 17 city homes. The largest block will be enclosed with an underground parking garage for residents and a parking garage at ground level for supermarket visitors. The apartments will be built above this level with the supermarket and other commercial spaces. The design takes particular account of the noise and traffic pollution from the busy Schipholweg and the front and rear blocks’ need for exposure to sunlight. Exposing the inner courtyard to sunlight was the reason to create a sunshine gap in the noise-polluted south facade. An expressive corten steel and glass screen ensures that the inner courtyard is unaffected by traffic noise.
