In 2000 FARO and aTA entered a contest along with Bouwfonds MAB and van Wijnen for the location Maria Foundation in Haarlem. On this former hospital ground of almost three hectare, 400 homes, 8.000 m² office space and a garage for 600 cars had to be realized.
The team did a lot of study and concluded that with this high density different kind of courtyards would be the solution to creating the best quality of living on this site. Obviously only a small percentage can live overlooking the Spaarne, therefore it is important that the quality of the urban space on the inside is very high.
The site has four diverse sides. The architecture reacts to each of these sides in its own way. Tall buildings on the busy road side, transparency on the water front, small scale buildings in the narrow Spijkermanslaantje and also taking in account the existing monuments on the park side.
FARO designed apartment buildings, multi storey apartments, townhouses and office space. The small apartment buildings with luxurious apartments have façades with plenty of glass and French balconies. The two blocks with town houses have private gardens. Next to the former monumental main hospital building, we’re working on an office building. The materials used are orange and brown brick and white window frames that accentuate the openings in the façade. Subtle detail in the brick refine the façades on a smaller scale.
