NEIGHBOURHOOD CHERISHES ROMANTIQUE FROM THE 19TH CENTURY, LEIDEN
FARO designed this renovation project in this neighborhood in Leiden for Portaal developers. The new situation has been developed after listening carefully to a delegation of the existing residents. Together we came to a plan with single family homes and apartments looking out over a small park. 145 houses were taken down, 103 houses have been build new. Parking issues was one of the main reasons to decrease the number of houses.
The homes in the interior of the plan have only two layers. This creates the small scale and intimate character of these residential streets. The homes on the edges of the neighborhood have three layers and form a strong frame for the interior world. Each home has a reasonable size yard.
The architecture of the plan has been inspired by the pre-war architecture of the immediate surroundings. Especially the white band on the façade attracts the eye. Other aspects are an orange – red hand formed brick with a dark receding joint, white window frames and dark grey ceramic roof tiles. A number of benches have been integrated into the facades to enliven the street life. On the white bands on the façade, a modern poet has created poetry that is added here in an artistic way. The passers-by will be drawn into this plan, each with their own interpretation of these lines.
