50-YEAR-OLD SUBURB TO LAST ANOTHER 100 YEARS, NIJMEGEN
The Hatert district is being renovated, with construction also taking place on the until now unbuilt Circusterrein. Two apartment buildings and a project with 36 family homes will be constructed. FARO is designing one apartment building and the family homes.
One architectural vocabulary has been developed in collaboration with VVKH, which is designing the third apartment building. The three projects will have their own look, while also demonstrating coherence. The urban planning concept for the various plans is in keeping with the existing buildings, a continuation of the main form of flat roofs with insulation in various places.
The building design focuses on the surrounding environment. For example, façades are characterized by horizontal fascias on Thorbeckestraat, with a more vertical focus along the park on Couwenberghstraat. 35 assisted living apartments for senior citizens will be built in the apartment building. These are characterized by a spacious living room with interior courtyard that can be closed off. The building contains a spacious “corridor” offering residents plenty of opportunities to meet.
The apartment building’s heating is generated by a heat pump and fed by a heat/cold storage system in the ground. This technology also enables sustainable cooling in the summer. The heat from the discharged air is also removed and added to the fresh air. These technologies make the building extremely energy-efficient and comfortable.
